2023 Results - Headteacher Statement

Everyone at Bishop Rawstorne is pleased and somewhat relieved (after all of the media hype) with the GCSE results that have been achieved by our students following their examinations in Summer 2023. This year’s results are no different to any other year, there are things that we can really celebrate as our strengths, areas that are as we expected, and a few areas to develop, exactly as you would expect from a high-achieving, aspirational school.

Across the whole year group so many students have achieved grades that reflect so well the effort that has been put in over the previous five years. None of this happens in isolation and huge thanks go to our teaching staff, support staff and the Governing Body for the unwavering, unstinting commitment that they have shown in driving forward the progression and attainment of our students, day after day. Of course none of this would be possible without the parents who have supported us over the last five years in shaping the academic and spiritual lives of this cohort to whom we give our very best wishes for the future.

In English and Maths 26% of students achieved a Grade 7 or better in both (23% in 2019). 64% of students achieved a strong pass (9-5 grades) in both subjects, broadly in line with 2019, and 86% achieved a standard pass in both subjects (9-4 grades), also broadly in line with 2019.

80% achieved 5 or more Standard Passes (Grade 4 or above) including both English and. 60% achieved 5 or more Strong Passes (Grade 5 or above) including both English and Maths. This shows the strength of our students across all our subjects.

Our EBacc figure for this year is 54%, measuring students who have achieved standard passes, and 34%, measuring students who have achieved strong passes. We are delighted with what these results represent, demonstrating that our students’ have continued to attain a depth of achievement across the entire curriculum (English, Maths, the Sciences, one or more humanity and a language), despite the challenges of the last few years. Over two-thirds of our cohort was eligible for the EBacc, which reflects our clear commitment to providing a broad and balanced curriculum.

In English and Maths, 50% and 29% respectively of our students achieved a 7-9 Grade, equivalent to the old A* or A grade (very much in line with 2019). When considering the old A* to C grade (now grade 9 to 4), 96% of English and 86% of Maths students gained a Grade 4 or above. Students achieved well at the very highest level, Grade 7 to 9, across many subjects but particularly of note were 40% of students achieving Grade 7 to 9 in Computer Science, 57% in Music, 39% in English Literature and also in English Language, and between 47% to 52% in each of the Triple Sciences.

Special mention should be given to 24 of our students who achieved 9 Grade 9/7 passes or more, including eight of our students who gained an incredible 7 or more Grade 9 passes, a very pleasing number and a truly exceptional achievement that reflects the unstinting endeavour of these students.

As our Class of 2018 students move on to the next challenge, they do so having maximised their opportunities and potential here at Bishop Rawstorne. We wish them all well.

Given the uneven impact of the pandemic on school and college performance data, the government has said you should not make direct comparisons between the performance data for one school or college and another, or to data from previous years. For this reason, we have decided to no longer report 2020 and 2021 results, which were from Centre Assessed and Teacher Assessed Grades.

In addition, to the above government advice, due to a late change in the rules in 2022 which saw any qualification (for us, English Literature) being sat by Yr. 11 a year early, though this qualification would count for the students, for one year only it will not count in our school measures. This temporary rule has had a detrimental effect on some of our 2022 measures. Therefore, to help give some clearer comparison between 2022 and 2019 (the last year of exams prior to Covid), we have added in italics the measures if early entry qualifications (English Literature) had counted as normal in the headline figures.

2022 Results - Headteacher Statement

We are delighted to report that the students of Bishop Rawstorne have achieved an outstanding set of GCSE results and we send our class of 2017 our heartfelt congratulations. For the first time since Summer 2019 Bishop Rawstorne students sat external GCSE examinations and can be immensely proud of what they have achieved. Across the entire curriculum results have been at least on a par with those achieved three years ago. However, for a large number of our headline figures, both whole school and by subject, there are just not enough superlatives to describe the increase in results that our extremely talented cohort have achieved. This cohort had disruption to their education and yet took it in their stride and their attitude, work rate and commitment in Year 11 was absolutely phenomenal.

These grades reflect so well the effort that has been put in over the previous five years. None of this happens in isolation and huge thanks go to our teaching staff, support staff and the Governing Body for the unwavering, unstinting commitment that they have shown in driving forward the progression and attainment of our students, day after day.  Of course, none of this would be possible without the parents who have supported us over the last five years in shaping the academic and spiritual lives of this cohort to whom we give our very best wishes for the future.

The results achieved in English Language and Maths are excellent and 75.5% of students achieved a strong pass (9-5 grades) in both subjects, nearly 3% up on 2019, and 88.8% achieved a standard pass in both subjects (9-4 grades), very similar to 2019. 85% achieved 5 or more Standard Passes (Grade 4 or above) including both English and Maths, identical to 2019. 72% achieved 5 or more Strong Passes (Grade 5 or above) including both English and Maths, 2.5% up on 2019. This shows the strength of our students across all our subjects.

Our E-Bacc figure for this year is 57% (2% better than 2019), measuring students who have achieved standard passes, and 51%, measuring students who have achieved strong passes (9% above 2019). We are delighted with what these results represent, demonstrating that our students have continued to demonstrate a depth of achievement across the entire curriculum (English, Maths, the Sciences, one or more Humanity and a language), despite the challenges of the last few years.

In English Language and Maths, 55% and 40% respectively of our students achieved a 7-9 Grade, equivalent to the old A* or A grade (up from 46% and 27.5% in 2019). When considering the old A* to C grade (now grade 9 to 4) 95% in English and 90% of Maths students remarkably attained this basic level.  We are understandably very proud of this phenomenal achievement in these core subjects, similar exceptional outcomes have been repeated across our wide and challenging diet of subjects. Students achieved at the very highest level, Grade 8 or 9, across many subjects but particularly of note were 35% of students achieving Grade 8 or 9 in English Language, 37%  to 38% in each of the Triple Sciences, 47% in Food, 30% in Geography and 36% in PE.

Special mention should be given to 32 of our students who achieved 9 Grade 9/7 passes or more (20 in 2019), including six of our students who gained an incredible 7 or more Grade 9 passes, a phenomenal number and a truly exceptional achievement that reflects the unstinting endeavour of these students.

As our outstanding class of 2017 moves on to the next challenge, they do so having fully maximised their opportunities and potential here at Bishop Rawstorne. We wish them all well as they embark upon the next phase of their educational and life journeys.

2021 Results – Deputy Headteacher Statement August 2021

Today is a hugely significant day in your life, GCSE Results’ Day and the end of your time in secondary education here at Bishop Rawstorne.

These last five years have gone by so quickly and you have experienced, achieved and developed so much. Results’ Day is a reflection of how hard you have worked, the sacrifices you have made to achieve success and the starting point for the next stage of your life journey. Enjoy the moment, savour your success.

No year group at Bishop Rawstorne has ever faced the level of challenge, uncertainty and loss that you have had to live with through Year 10 and Year 11, but no year group has ever displayed such resilience, perseverance and positivity, as you have. This will shape your character in the long term, but for today you can feel so proud of what you have achieved and how as a year group you represent the very best of what Bishop Rawstorne stands for. Your parents should be and will be immensely proud of you. Never forget, whatever grade you have attained in any subject, it has never ever been harder fought for and won.

All of us here at school, the Governing Body and all of the staff salute your strength, versatility and unstinting commitment. We thank you for making us proud.

Move forward, make a difference, bravely and faithfully.

2019 Results – Headteacher Statement August 2019

Another excellent year of progress and attainment for Bishop Rawstorne students

We are delighted to report that the students of Bishop Rawstorne have achieved a very pleasing set of GCSE results and we send our class of 2014 our heartfelt congratulations. There have been many outstanding performances and much to be pleased about. The results are a reflection of how well those who have achieved success have engaged with high quality teaching and homework, applied themselves to revising well and having excellent attendance.

The results achieved in English Language and Maths are excellent and 72.8% of students achieved a strong pass in both subjects, a slight increase on 2018 (9-5 grades) and 89% achieved a standard pass in both subjects (9-4 grades).

Our E-Bacc figure for this year is 55%, measuring students who have achieved standard passes, and 42%, measuring students who have achieved strong passes (both noticeably improved on last year). We are delighted with these results as they represent a depth of achievement across the entire curriculum. In English Language and Maths, 25.3% and 12.4% respectively of our students achieved the highest grades of 8 and 9. In English Language and Maths, 46.1% and 27.5% respectively of our students achieved a 7-9 Grade, equivalent to an A* or A grade previously. When considering the old A* to C grade (now grade 9 to 4) 94% in English and 90% of Maths students remarkably attained this basic level.  This is a phenomenal achievement of which we are very proud.

It is always pleasing to see figures that are already considerably above the national average and our challenge for 2020 is to maintain and build upon this success to enhance outcomes for the class of 2015. All of the data are challenging national data measurement figures and thoroughly justify our ongoing commitment to providing our students with a predominantly academic pathway.

Special mention should be given to 20 of our students who achieved 9 Grade 9-7 passes or more, including four of our students who gained an incredible 7 or more Grade 9 passes, a very pleasing number and a truly exceptional achievement that reflects the unstinting endeavour of these students.

As this outstanding group of students moves on to the next challenge, they do so having fully maximised their opportunities and potential here at Bishop Rawstorne. We wish them all well.
